IELTS UKVI vs Academic — the expensive mix-up UK applicants keep making
Key facts
- Same test, same difficulty — UKVI just runs under extra UK Home Office rules
- Degree-level students at licensed universities usually don't need UKVI — the regular Academic often suffices
- Below-degree courses, foundation and some visa routes do require UKVI
- Wrong version = book and pay again — always confirm with your university first
IELTS for UKVI is not a harder exam — it's the same Academic or General Training test delivered under UK-government-approved conditions, and it costs more. The trap: booking UKVI "just in case", or booking regular IELTS when your route legally requires UKVI.
The rule of thumb
- Degree course at a licensed UK university (bachelor's/master's): universities can accept the regular Academic test — most do. Ask your admissions office before paying.
- Foundation, pathway, below-degree courses and certain visa categories: UKVI version required.
