IELTS UKVI vs Academic — the expensive mix-up UK applicants keep making

IELTS for UKVI is not a harder exam — it's the same Academic or General Training test delivered under UK-government-approved conditions, and it costs more. The trap: booking UKVI "just in case", or booking regular IELTS when your route legally requires UKVI.
Is IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training?
Both — and that is the part most people get wrong. "IELTS for UKVI" is not a third module. It is a delivery mode approved by the UK Home Office, and you book it in one of two flavours:
- IELTS for UKVI Academic — for study routes.
- IELTS for UKVI General Training — for work, family and settlement routes.
So the real question is never "Academic or UKVI?" It is two separate questions: which module (Academic or General Training), and does my route need the UKVI version.

That last row is why people gamble — and why the gamble is expensive in both directions.
Who needs UKVI, and who does not
The UK Student visa rules split on your course level:
- Degree level or above (bachelor's, master's, PhD): the requirement is CEFR B2. A Higher Education Provider is allowed to assess your English itself instead of demanding an approved SELT — which is why most UK universities accept an ordinary IELTS Academic. Confirm with your admissions office in writing before you pay.
- Below degree level (foundation, pathway and similar): the requirement is CEFR B1, and it must be proved with an approved SELT — that means IELTS for UKVI.
- Work, family and settlement routes: a SELT is required at that route's level — IELTS for UKVI General Training, or IELTS Life Skills for the A1/A2/B1 speaking-and-listening routes.

What does IELTS for UKVI cost in Uzbekistan?
Standard IELTS in Uzbekistan, read from the IDP Tashkent booking page in August 2026:
- Computer-delivered — 2 665 000 so'm
- Paper-based — 2 639 000 so'm
IELTS for UKVI is a separate product and is priced higher than both. We are not publishing a UKVI figure here, because we could not confirm one on an official IDP or British Council page — and a wrong number on a fee this size is worse than no number. Open the official booking page and read the UKVI price there before you budget.
Booking the computer-based UKVI test
You book UKVI through the same IDP or British Council flow as an ordinary test, but you must pick the "IELTS for UKVI" product — it is a separate listing from IELTS Academic, not a checkbox you tick afterwards. Because UKVI may only be delivered at approved SELT venues, the list of dates and cities is shorter than for standard IELTS. Check that availability before you book travel, and re-read the product name on the payment screen: that screen is the last moment the mistake is still free.
The two mistakes that cost a full retake
- Booking UKVI "just in case." If your university assesses English itself, you paid the higher fee for nothing. Ask first.
- Booking standard IELTS for a route that legally requires a SELT. The certificate is valid — it just cannot be used for that visa. There is no upgrade path. You book again and pay again.
One email to your admissions office costs nothing and settles it.

UKVI alohida qiyin imtihon emas — o'sha test, faqat Buyuk Britaniya hukumati tasdiqlagan sharoitda o'tkaziladi va qimmatroq turadi. "UKVI" uchinchi modul emas: siz UKVI Academic (o'qish uchun) yoki UKVI General Training (ish, oila, doimiy yashash uchun) ni bron qilasiz.
