The Duolingo English Test has become a real budget alternative: about $65, roughly an hour, taken from home, results in around two days, and an acceptance list that has grown past 5,500 institutions — strongest in the US.
Where it does not work
- UK visa routes that require a SELT — DET is not on the approved list.
- Government scholarships (El-Yurt Umidi, Chevening universities, most state programmes) overwhelmingly specify IELTS or TOEFL.
- Always check the exact university page — "accepts DET" for admission does not always mean "accepts DET for the scholarship".
Strategy: DET is a great low-cost backup for US applications; IELTS remains the universal key for scholarships and the UK.
