Others insist that these venues remain valuable, both to the economy and to culture. In my view, while online platforms are convenient, physical venues continue to play an important role.

Those who believe theatres and cinemas are no longer necessary point to the sheer convenience and cost of digital entertainment. A single subscription gives instant access to thousands of films and shows, which can be watched anywhere and paused at will, without the expense of tickets, travel or refreshments. For many families, staying at home is simply cheaper and easier than a night out.

However, there are strong reasons why these venues still matter. Economically, cinemas and theatres employ large numbers of people and support surrounding businesses such as restaurants and transport. Culturally, they offer a shared, collective experience that a screen at home cannot replicate: the atmosphere of a live audience, the scale of a cinema screen, and the spontaneity of live theatre. They also preserve traditions and give local performers a stage, sustaining art forms that might otherwise disappear.

In conclusion, although online entertainment has understandably reduced how often people visit theatres and cinemas, I believe these venues remain important. Rather than replacing them, digital platforms should be seen as an additional option, while the unique economic and cultural value of live and cinema experiences continues to justify their existence.
